The Gemini transatlantic cable system is up and running ahead of schedule. The project, a joint venture between the United Kingdom`s Cable & Wireless plc (London) and WorldCom Inc. (Jackson, MS) of the United States, is designed to carry Internet, multimedia, and voice services over a 60-Gbit/sec undersea highway. The southern cable, offering 30 Gbits/sec, is now open for business. The northern link, which will provide a redundant 30-Gbit/sec capacity, is scheduled to be available this October. Besides using the cable network for their own purposes, Cable & Wireless and WorldCom will also lease capacity to third parties.
