November 18, 2002--West Bay Semiconductor Inc. introduced the WB1400 and the WB1510, two standard product channelized framers and pointer processors targeting low cost SONET/SDH metropolitan access telecommunications equipment applications.

West Bay Semiconductor Inc. introduced the WB1400 and the WB1510, two standard product channelized framers and pointer processors targeting low cost SONET/SDH metropolitan access telecommunications equipment applications.

The WB1400 and WB1510 are highly integrated, low cost product offerings that allow West Bay to compete more effectively in the rapidly growing metro access market.

Target applications for the new devices include digital crossconnects and multi service provisioning platforms (MSPPs), as well as broadband aggregator and add-drop multiplexer equipment used to aggregate end user traffic transmitted over T1/E1/J1/DS3, wireless, digital subscriber line (DSL) and other transmission pipes, into high speed network connections.

"The WB1400 and WB1510 are part of an aggressive SONET/SDH product roadmap, and reflect West Bay's strategic focus and long term commitment to this market segment," said Tino Varelas, West Bay Semiconductor President and chief executive officer. "Our goal is to provide customers with one of the most comprehensive product portfolios in the industry for high density, low cost standard products for legacy and next generation SONET/SDH applications."

During the past 18 months, West Bay has introduced five high density SONET/SDH chips including channelized and virtual concatenation framers.

The WB1400 is a single chip 4 x OC-3/STM-1 or 1 x OC-12/STM-4 SONET/SDH fully channelized framer and pointer processor. The device enables equipment makers to design a single card for all OC-12/STM-4 aggregate bandwidth applications. The flexibility of such a card can be further enhanced by using standard form-factor plugable (SFP) optical Transceivers, or by using multi rate optics.

In addition, the WB1400 has a triple-redundant system side interface and crossconnect that enables connections to multiple devices or cards, such as tributary interfaces at the DS1/E1/DS3/E3 or OC-3/STM-1 rates. In the OC-3/STM-1 mode, the WB1400 incorporates on-chip clock and data recovery (CDR).

The WB1510 is the industry's first single chip 2 x OC-12/STM-4 or 2 x OC-3/STM-1 SONET/SDH fully channelized framer and pointer processor. The device offers equipment makers the flexibility to design 2-fiber line interfaces for ring applications, using a single chip. The 2 x OC-3/STM-1 mode enables systems engineers to design a single line interface card for both OC-12/STM-4 and OC-3/STM-1 rates. In the OC-3/STM-1 mode, the WB1510 includes built-in CDR.

The WB1400 and WB1510 are packaged in 35 mm x 35 mm, 648 pin PBGAs, and are priced at $130 for the WB1400, and at $165 for the WB1510 in 10,000 volume quantities. Samples will be available in January 2003. Comprehensive support packages complete the product offerings.
