EDO Corporation (NYSE:EDO) announced it has entered the fiber optic communications market with a $3.5 million contract award from a global fiber optic network operator for electronic modules for use in broadband fiber optic network systems. The units, the first devices in a series of OC-192-compatible modules under development by EDO, are scheduled for delivery over the next 18 months.
These modules, which have broad applicability in the fiber optic industry, interface with the optical portions of the fiber systems and are capable of transmitting and receiving data at rates in excess of 10 Gigabits per second. When used in Dense Wave Division Multiplexed (DWDM) systems, data rates in excess of 1 Terabit per second over several thousand kilometers of fiber optic cable can be achieved.
The initial $3.5 million contract is for modules used in conjunction with the transmitter Lithium Niobate modulator, enabling superior BER performance. The modules were designed and will be manufactured by EDO's Space and Communications Products Division at its facility in Deer Park, N.Y.
