This week at NFOEC in Baltimore, Sumitomo Electric Lightwave (Research Triangle Park, No. Carolina), a manufacturer of fiber optic cable, fiber management systems, fusion equipment and interconnect solutions for the telecommunications market, announced what the company claims to be the first 864 fiber, all dielectric ribbon cable with 36 fiber ribbons.

Forging ahead with 15 products within the last year or so, the company has made a bold step, announcing their intentions to be a strong presence in fiber-ribbon manufacturing.

The company developed the ribbon fiber in response to the need for high-density, high-bandwidth solutions. The Sumitomo 864 cable offers a higher fiber packing density than ribbon in loose tube 864 fiber construction, allowing the cable to fit within existing 1-1/4-inch duet space used in most optical network infrastructures.

The primary feature of the cable lies in the patented design of the ribbon. The cable fibers can be peeled and handled easily without the use of chemicals to remove the fiber matrix. The 36-fiber ribbon can be split easily into 12-fiber ribbons sub-units for mass splicing. Further, each 12-fiber ribbon can be peeled to access individual fibers for single-fusion splicing, offering flexibility, time- and cost-savings. Mechanical properties include 1,000 lbs. Rated tensile load, ensuring reliability and protection from installation risks.

The company also unveiled its Fiber Routing Control (FRC) system and related products that maximize installation for fiber management and distribution. The FRC system features central waterfall slots in a rack-mounted, high-density TSX shelves in 72 and 144 counts. The shelves' FRC system eases installation and extraction of patch cords for rerouting and troubleshooting, lending a cost-effective solution. The company claims the TSX-144 shelf was the first to pass high-density OC-192 Telcordia testing.

Both products are strong representations of how Sumitomo Electric Lightwave is a bandwidth solutions provider, offering high-density, low-cost solutions that allow users the flexibility to meet custom fiber count and management requirements.

Sumitomo Electric Lightwave possesses a strong background of communications network solutions and equipment. Having recently announced a ribbon and tailored bandwidth marketing communications campaign, the company pronounced a dedication to the advancement of local and long-distance telecommunications and bandwidth technologies. At NFOEC, the company launched its corporate message of "expanding bandwidth opportunities through the use of ribbon fiber" as a response to the growing need for cost-effective, high-bandwidth, high-density solutions and better bandwidth management. The company also claims to have the best peelable ribbon in the industry. The company also recently expanded its ribbon-configured fiber management bay assembly and fiber distribution products.
