WDM sales up 12% year-on-year in first quarter 2014 says Dell'Oro Group

Sales of WDM gear worldwide in the first quarter of 2014 grew 12% versus the same quarter in 2013, a new report from Dell’Oro Group asserts.

Sales of WDM gear worldwide in the first quarter of 2014 grew 12% versus the same quarter in 2013, a new report from Dell’Oro Group asserts.

"WDM sales have been amazingly robust over the past four quarters as service providers continue to add network capacity," said Jimmy Yu, Vice President of Optical Transport research at Dell’Oro Group. "While total optical market demand has entered positive growth during this period, the WDM market stands out as the true beneficiary of the increased investment."

As other market research firms have suggested (see "100G makes up 20% of the WDM market says Infonetics"), the take up of 100-Gbps technology should drive sales in the near term, according to Yu. “Furthermore, as 100-Gbps WDM transmission rates enter mainstream use, we don’t see an end to its growth,” he explained. “We estimate that in the recent first quarter 2014 the number of 100-Gbps WDM line card shipments more than doubled versus the same period last year.”

Huawei maintained its rolling four quarters market share lead. The table below, courtesy of Dell’Oro, shows the performances of the top four vendors.

The data is contained in Dell’Oro Group’s latest "Optical Transport Quarterly" Report. The report offers tables covering manufacturers’ revenue, average selling prices, and unit shipments (by speed including 40 Gbps, 100 Gbps, and greater than 100 Gbps). The report tracks DWDM long-haul terrestrial, WDM metro, multiservice multiplexers (SONET/SDH), optical switch, and optical packet platforms.
