SEPTEMBER 19, 2006 -- Ignis Photonyx (search Ignis Photonyx), manufacturer of Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) components for the access and metro markets will feature a working WDM-PON (search WDM-PON) system at its booth during the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) show in Cannes, France, September 25 - 27 at booth #261.

The WDM-PON system--from LG-Nortel with Ignis components inside--will demonstrate triple-play capability featuring IPTV, broadband data, and telephony. By virtue of having a wavelength to each home, bi-directional 100 Mbits/sec can be provided to satisfy bandwidth-hungry services such as video-on-demand and high-speed data.

"We are seeing more systems players developing WDM-PON products, and it appears that this technology may take off faster than we first thought," notes Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research. "Providing quantities of low-cost PLC components from their own fabricating plant may not only help to speed up more affordable FTTH, but puts Ignis on the map as a player in the access market."

With their own fabricating plant in Denmark, Ignis Photonyx has established low-cost, high-volume PLC component manufacturing for WDM-PON and other access platforms.

The Ignis WDM-PON Athermal AWG (Arrayed Waveguide Grating) has been designed to ensure high-performance in harsh remote-node environmental conditions.

"The Ignis Athermal AWG components in the LG-Nortel WDM-PON equipment have been specifically designed and manufactured to perform the critical wavelength splitting function," explains Ignis Photonyx' CEO Even Zimmer. "This live demo will prove that WDM-PON is a fully commercially available working system and that Ignis PLC components are helping [to make] WDM-PON technology a high-bandwidth, cost-effective alternative to other access solutions."

Ignis is using the opportunity at ECOC 2006 to demonstrate WDM-PON, as well a range of access PLC products to serve a growing European and international market.
