JULY 26, 2007 -- AboveNet Communications UK Ltd. (search for AboveNet), provider of fiber-optic connectivity for business and carriers and a subsidiary of AboveNet Inc., today announced its expansion of Metro-Wave, a service offering AboveNet customers private wavelengths between strategically placed hubs in and around London. Utilizing Nortel's (search for Nortel) Optical Metro 5000 series equipment, AboveNet says it is extending Metro-Wave connectivity to a new hub in Slough.

Leveraging its experience in building and managing dedicated WDM networks, AboveNet says it has built its Metro-Wave network to connect the major business districts in London. By offering managed wavelengths to each customer, AboveNet is enabling more companies to benefit from managed connectivity services supported by a secure and scalable next-generation network.

Having recently expanded to Park Royal, AboveNet's Metro-Wave footprint will now span from the Docklands in the east through the City, out to Heathrow and Slough in the west. AboveNet uses dedicated fiber to extend the reach of Metro-Wave from enabled sites directly to customer locations. This allows companies to implement disaster recovery, storage, hosting, and business continuity strategies, which avoid or complement traditional telco infrastructures, say AboveNet representatives.

AboveNet says the simplicity of this network design means it can offer customers short lead-times for service provisioning as well as a scalable, flexible service supporting multiple protocols up to 10 Gbits/sec.

"Our proven Optical Metro 5000 equipment enables AboveNet to quickly and confidently deploy new services and locations in line with growing market demand," reports Tony Bailey, vice president UK & Ireland Channels, Nortel. "Our equipment, combined with AboveNet fiber, provides AboveNet's Metro-Wave customers affordable scalable capacity and supports virtually any protocol with proven levels of performance and reliability. This, in turn, allows AboveNet to meet customer requirements today, while providing a scalable platform for both AboveNet and its customers in the hyperconnected future," he says.

AboveNet has been working with Nortel and the Optical Metro 5000 platform for over seven years, say the companies, and AboveNet is an accredited Nortel Solutions Partner. "I am extremely pleased with the continued development of our Metro-Wave service," adds John Dowbiggin, managing director of AboveNet Communications UK Ltd. "I am certain that this extension will only serve to grow our existing Metro-Wave customer base. Moreover," he says, "it will further emphasize AboveNet's commitment to listening to our customers and developing services in line with their networking requirements."
