18 March 2003 -- Cegetel, the first private telecommunications operator in France, is deploying Extreme Network's vMAN capability to deliver its One-LAN Virtual MAN service.

Millions of subscribers can be supported on the network - allowing Cegetel to provision services cost-effectively with native Ethernet and IP technology.

Extreme claims its switching technology, with wire-speed performance, provides the flexibility that service providers deploy to provide innovative Metro services.

Jim Metzler, of Ashton, Metzler & Associates, said, "Evolution of telecommunication services is underway in the Metro. Ethernet is an excellent infrastructure choice to accommodate scalable and ubiquitous IP services, and is now providing the ability to establish vMANs."

Cegetel's One-LAN service replaces the customer's need to purchase new access links, allowing data to be shared between locations transparently, as if it were a single, local network infrastructure. Using the service, several remote locations can be virtually connected across the network. To reduce network complexity, Extreme Networks' vMAN technology enables Cegetel to create this transparent link using only Ethernet technology.

"Cegetel's One-LAN provides a better choice for customers to establish transparent LAN services and successfully connect all of their office locations," said Danny Cote, marketing director of Cegetel.

"We are able to provide this service more effectively with Extreme Networks' advanced switching platforms. The vMAN capability is distinct in its ability to scale the delivery of metro services while maintaining a pure Ethernet infrastructure, the same simple technology used in the customer's LAN."
