PPL Telcom completes Philadelphia gateway
AUGUST 2, 2007 -- PPL Telcom (search for PPL Telcom) announced the completion of a dual node optical network architecture to deliver a layer of protection for customers in the greater Philadelphia region.
"Establishing this enhanced structure provides our customers even more security and reliability as we continue to strengthen one of the industry's most powerful networks," said Paul Zanotto, PPL Telcom operations director.
The Philadelphia area is the most concentrated region for both customers and fiber within PPL Telcom's network. The company says the twin-node installation, which creates secondary network routing in the event of an unforeseen data interruption, brings a higher level of resiliency to its network in this region.
Earlier this year, PPL Telcom completed construction of a dual-node architecture in Washington, DC, affording more network redundancy for customers between Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and the Nation's Capitol.
"The completion of this project, along with our continuing infrastructure upgrades and enhancements, provides our customers in Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and South Jersey with a premier network in the Mid-Atlantic region," stated Don Kaufmann, director of engineering for PPL Telcom. "We are exceeding our customers' expectations."
The company states that more network upgrades are planned over the next several months, including the expansion of the company's Optical Wavelength Service between DC and New York City. The expansion will add 400 gigabits of capacity as an alternative to dark fiber and high-bandwidth carrier services.
"We remain committed to improving and protecting the integrity of our network," added David Kelley, president of PPL Telcom. "In turn, this reinforces our promise to provide the highest quality and secure networking services possible."
PPL Telcom provides broadband connectivity for telecommunications companies, wireless and Internet service providers, and large businesses and institutions. It currently is a subsidiary of PPL Corp. However, in May 2007, Communications Infrastructure Investments, LLC signed an agreement to acquire PPL Telcom. The sale is expected to close before the end of the year.
