Legrand North and Central America (LNCA) has unveiled Infinium Quantum, a low-loss data center fiber-optic system the company proclaims is now their top of the line. The system, available in both single-mode fiber and multimode fiber variants, enables channel link loss of 0.75 dB. LNCA asserts this figure represents a 64% improvement over standard systems and a 38% improvement over currently available ultra-low-loss fiber-optic systems.
The system portfolio includes an enclosure with a modular panel, pre-terminated cassettes that offer MPO to LC connectivity, trunk cabling, and patch cords. LNCA has positioned Infinium Quantum as enabling a migration path to 400-Gbps and greater data center networking that either reduces or obviates the need to replace cabling components. Installers can configure the system can for 8-, 12- or 24-fiber connectivity for all Ethernet system options that use Base-8 or Base-12.
The company notes that TIA-568.3-D allows a multimode connector loss up to a maximum of 0.75dB each, but asserts that typical multimode connectors suffer losses of 0.2-0.5 dB, while factory-made and fusion-spliced single-mode connectors have losses of 0.1-0.2 dB. The Infinium Quantum’s single-mode total channel connection return loss is -55 dB and the multimode system return loss is -34 dB. The Infinium Quantum system achieves the lower loss (as well as power savings), at least in part, through use of angled multimode connectivity for high-bandwidth optical transceivers.
“Typically, single-mode systems employ angled connectors, but with today’s VCSEL transceivers, which are required for high-bandwidth multimode systems, these generate more heat, which can create additional back reflections. Therefore, the multimode angled solution ultimately provides better optical return loss performance,” explains Randy Harris, senior product manager at Legrand.
