Telia Carrier establishes PoPs in Portland, OR

Telia Carrier has expanded its presence in North America with the opening of two points of presence (PoPs) in the area around Portland, OR, including Hillsboro. The service provider expects the new PoPs to help it better address the needs of over-the-top (OTT) service providers, hyperscale cloud network operators, and carriers with connectivity needs in the area.

The service provider notes that tax incentives and green hydro power sources have driven significant growth in data center and communication site construction in the Portland area over the last two years. Hillsboro has emerged as a connectivity hotbed, particularly as new submarine cable systems land in the area (see, for example, "ViaWest to offer access to New Cross Pacific submarine cable via Oregon data center"). The site therefore enables Telia Carrier to meet requirements for connectivity to and from Asia. The service provider says its Hillsboro location is designed with long-haul routes that create diversity from downtown Portland, home of several legacy carrier facilities. What the service provider described as "careful selection of the routing at river crossings" improves connection reliability as well.

"With continued investment in large-scale data centers and as new sea cable landings come online next year to support traffic demand from the Asia Pacific region, Hillsboro is a prime location for us to introduce new PoPs," said Art Kazmierczak, Telia Carrier's director of business and network development. "By expanding to Portland, we continue to deliver best-in-class IP transit performance for education and broadband customers with minimal network hops, high resilience, and inherent route diversity. These capabilities ensure our customers get the best possible connectivity and, ultimately, they enhance the online experience for end users."
