June 20, 2005 Paris, France -- Alcatel today announced that Elion Enterprises, Estonia's major provider of telecommunication services, has signed a contract for the delivery of a FTTU platform to enable high bandwidth voice, video, and data communications services in Estonia. This contract follows a successful FTTU trial, which ran from October 2004 through May 2005. Elion will install the FTTU platform in Merirahu and Alasniidu, two greenfield sites near Tallinn, Estonia.
"We were very pleased with the results of the Alcatel equipment during the field trial," explains Toivo Praakel, network director of Elion Enterprises. "It was important to us that the technology be capable of supporting the services we intend to offer now and in the future, and offer us unlimited bandwidth - but also continuity, reliability, and universal usability, while saving opex."
"The installation of FTTU in greenfield deployments is a good strategic choice," adds Michel Rahier, head of Alcatel's fixed communications activities. "As an access technology, fiber offers almost unlimited and scalable bandwidth, opening the door to an unprecedented combination of triple play services - including HDTV and multiple standard TV streams - to be delivered into the [home]."
Under the contract's terms, the company will supply its standard-based, residential 7340 FTTU passive optical network (PON) platform.
