May 11, 2005 Rome, Italy -- Tiscali Italia has deployed Nortel's optical communications infrastructure across more than 300 Italian cities, in order to provide support for triple play broadband services, while allowing Tiscali to enable its Italian consumer and business customers with ADSL2-based access.

According to a press release, the optical network consolidates transport of all Tiscali-provided subscriber services over a single multiservice infrastructure for reduced operational costs. The first phase of the deployment, now complete, began in October 2004. The second phase is expected to be completed in 2006.

The carrier says the optical infrastructure allowed it to aggregate IP-DSLAMs providing "last-mile" access to its multiservice metro networks, while offering integrated Internet, telecommunications, and entertainment services.

Key components of the deployment include Nortel's Optical Metro 5000 and Optical Multiservice Edge (OME) 6500 products. The company says the secure, scalable platform is based on a DWDM/CWDM architecture that optimizes footprint and wavelength utilization for low cost per service.

Tiscali first engaged Nortel in 1998 to deploy backbone optical networks across Italy.
