Asia-Pacific FTTH subscribers up 35% study shows

Figures released by IDATE and the FTTH Council Asia-Pacific show that the number of fiber to the home (FTTH) subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region jumped to 115.8 million by the end of 2014, up 35% compared to 2013. The study also finds that 338 million homes and businesses across the region had access to fiber services, an increase of 36.8% year over year.

Figures released by IDATE and the FTTH Council Asia-Pacific show that the number of fiber to the home (FTTH) subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region jumped to 115.8 million by the end of 2014, up 35% compared to 2013. The study also finds that 338 million homes and businesses across the region had access to fiber-optic broadband services, an increase of 36.8% year over year.

The top seven Asian countries for fiber deployment, according to the research, are Japan with 100% of homes passed, South Korea and Singapore (both with 95%), followed by Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and China. The study also cites new deployments in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Pakistan "in parallel with deeper FTTx deployments to support smart cities using cloud-based applications," says Peter Macaulay, recently elected president of the FTTH Council Asia-Pacific.

"We now know that there is still a great deal of room for growth in the market," adds Macaulay. "Smart cities are being built upon fiber, including fiber to the home, building, node, and antenna, to support higher speeds and the increasing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices for the smart home."
