Auburn, IN, selects Wave7 for FTTP network

OCTOBER 30, 2006 -- The City of Auburn, IN, has selected Wave7 Optics' (search for Wave7 Optics) Trident7 Optical Access Platform for a new municipal fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network. Construction will begin this month, with first priority given to connecting the school system.

All parties expect that by the end of November 2006, approximately 4,000 students, teachers, and staff across four school facilities will be learning, teaching, and collaborating over a 500-Mbit/sec network. The increased bandwidth also is allowing the school system to roll out a much anticipated attendance application.

Upon completing the rest of the site engineering and related logistics, the City of Auburn will begin construction of the network's second phase in the first quarter of 2007. The new network will provide telephone and high-speed data services to all of the city's business districts, including more than 1,200 homes and businesses. Deployment is expected to be complete by the end of 2007. During the final stages of this phase, the city will evaluate and determine whether to offer similar services to all residents.

The City of Auburn decided to proceed with a citywide FTTP deployment after much public interest and a successful year-long run providing FTTP-based services to several businesses with Wave7's Last Mile Link (LML) system.

"Wave 7's LML has provided a rock solid network for our inaugural customers since first brining them online over 20 months ago," reports Chris Schweitzer, Auburn's IT Manager. "The reliability, quality, and low total cost of ownership of the Wave7 solution were determining factors in further deploying the product with our community wide business deployments. We are very excited about the Trident7 platform and the added functionality and flexibility it will provide in our community's network deployment," he says.

"In late 2004, the City of Auburn was on the verge of losing two of its largest businesses," adds Scott Bowles, president of Spectrum Engineering, which is managing the project's planning, design, and construction tasks. "We were under the gun to assist Auburn with developing and implementing a comprehensive broadband plan. Wave7 stepped up to meet the demanding deployment schedule at a time when others were unable. Wave 7's price, delivery, and service were all very attractive," he contends. "The product has operated well and customer service/support has been solid. With the community now looking forward to a more complete business deployment, it was natural to extend services using Wave 7 with the new Trident7 platform."
