The 25GS-PON MSA Group has announced the addition of 17 new members over the last four months. The new blood includes service providers Proximus, OptiComm, and INEA as well as cable industry innovation and resource organization CableLabs. New members from the vendor community include ALPHA, Asia Optical, BFW, CZT, DZS, EXFO, EZconn, Gemtek, JPC, MT2, Pegatron, SiFotonics, and WNC.
As its name implies the 25GS-PON MSA Group formed to promote the development and implementation of symmetrical 25-Gbps PON technology as the next step beyond current 10-Gbps XGS-PON (see “Operators, vendors combine to create 25GS-PON MSA”). Nokia, a founding member of the MSA, has developed such a technology (see “Nokia offers symmetrical 25G PON via ISAM FX”), which is designed to coexist with GPON and XGS-PON on the same fiber. Proximus is the first operator to implement it (see “Proximus turns up 25G PON link, commits to deployments”), while Openreach has tested it (see “Openreach tests Nokia 25G PON”).
“25G PON technology is arriving at just the right time,” commented Chris DePuy, technology analyst at 650 Group, via an MSA press release. “The technology provides a path forward for operators seeking to leverage their existing fiber network to deliver the capacity and broadband speeds essential for cost-effective ‘anyhaul’ support for 5G densification and enhanced services for large enterprises. It’s evident that the 25GS-PON MSA group’s ability to get in front of the market and establish specifications early for the technology is now leading to its rapid membership growth.”
Other members of the MSA group include AOI, AT&T, Chorus, Chunghwa Telecom, Ciena, Commscope, Cortina Access, Feneck, HiLight Semiconductor, Hisense, MACOM, MaxLinear, NBN Co., Semtech, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., and Tibit Communications.
