May 12, 2005 Livermore, CA -- Alloptic, a provider of Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (GEPONs), has announced that Smart Telecom, a telecommunications provider in Ireland, is deploying the company's fiber access network platform to provide voice, data, and IP video services to multi-dwelling unit communities and mixed-use developments.

"As we reviewed our technology options, Alloptic was the only equipment provider to offer the truly converged service platform that we needed for delivery of Smart Telecom's 'Digital Village' products and services," explains Oisin Fanning, CEO of Smart Telecom.
"Using the Alloptic GEPON architecture gives us the freedom to quickly expand our network into new areas, as well as [to determine] how and where we configure our head-end facilities."

The company says its GEPON platform leverages a standard ITU PON architecture, while delivering a gigabit of bandwidth. According to the company, with a native ability to support traditional TDM voice over Ethernet, the platform enables reliable telephone services while also supporting advanced services such as IP HDTV.

"Telecommunication providers that have built or upgraded their core network transport to Gigabit Ethernet, extending Ethernet technology all the way to the consumer, represent the next logical step in the modernization of the communications infrastructure," observes Mike Serrano, Alloptic's director of product marketing. "Using Alloptic's Gigabit Ethernet PON solution, Smart Telecom is able to provide a proven, IP network all the way to the customer."
