March 9, 2005 San Jose, CA -- Bookham, a provider of optical components, modules, and subsystems, unveiled its widely tunable transponder at this week's OFC/NFOEC conference. According to the company, its 10-Gbit/sec, 300-pin T1X transponder is among the first fully tunable modules to incorporate an internally produced laser and receiver.
"The key to volume deployment of tunable transponders is meeting the aggressive cost targets set by today's market. Having a robust internal component supply is the key to meeting these targets," explains Robert Baker, VP of product management at Bookham. "Using an electronically tuned, single-chip laser as the building block for the T1X enables volume manufacturing at lower costs."
According to the company, the transponder enables tunability in long haul systems, and is the first deployment of the company's DS-DBR tunable laser. The device complies with the industry standard 300-pin MSA (edition 4) for 10-Gbit/sec transponders, and supports full coverage of the C band.
The company says the device's DS-DBR laser is capable of fast tuning between channels to allow backup channel switching, and been demonstrated to operate within less than 10 milliseconds. The device has low thermal dissipation, and is available in a low-height format, allowing greater card density and improved card cooling.
The product is currently sampling, and is on display at the company's booth 2213 at OFC/NFOEC.
