May 26, 2005 Sunnyvale, CA -- Level 3 Communications has selected Infinera to supply optical networking equipment for a major deployment in the United States and Europe. As part of a network capacity upgrade, Level 3 will install Infinera's DTN digital optical equipment across a substantial portion of its 23,000-mile fiber-optic network. The equipment will provide DWDM at the network's optical transport layer, in order to support IP services such as Voice over IP (VoIP).
"Our digital optical networking equipment will, we believe, enable Level 3 to further enhance a wide variety of network performance attributes," remarks Jagdeep Singh, Infinera's CEO.
The company says its DTN platform, based on its photonic integrated circuits, combines DWDM, digital bandwidth management, and advanced network intelligence, supporting 800 Gbit/sec of DWDM capacity, while delivering manageable, secure SONET/SDH and Ethernet-based services.
"We're pleased to be working with Infinera on this deployment, which will help Level 3 meet the rapidly growing demand we're seeing for IP and transport services," comments Jack Waters, Level 3's CTO.
Level 3 is engaged in field trials and interoperability testing, and expects to finish installing the equipment along a majority of its intercity network routes in the U.S. by the end of 2005, according to a press release.
"The Infinera deployment is expected to generate a number of distinct advantages, including faster provisioning times, increased manageability, an improved ability to turn up incremental network routes, and a roadmap to new interfaces and services," concludes Waters.
