Kokusai Denshin Denwa (KDD) reports that a fifth transpacific fiber-optic cable network called TPC-5CN is expected to begin operation. Capable of handling data at 10 Gbits/sec, the 25,000-km network links Japan, the U.S. mainland, Hawaii, and Guam. KDD and 78 other carriers from 46 nations, including AT&T in the United States, have invested 134.7 billion yen (US$1.2 billion) to build the network.
