WorldCom Inc., Jacksonville, MS has announced that its pan-European fiber-optic cable system is scheduled for service in the spring of 1998 and will link London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Brussels. The second loop?between Paris, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt?is scheduled for service in the summer of 1998. WorldCom has completed construction of metropolitan area networks in those cities. Together, the loops will form the first phase of WorldCom?s construction project called Ulysses, which is intended to link all of WorldCom?s national telecommunications business in Europe. WorldCom has also announced plans to make available an international Asynchronous Transfer Mode (atm) service between the centers served by its pan-European fiber-optic network. The atm service would support constant and variable bit-rate transmission speeds up to 45 Mbits/sec.
