Soliton transmission has made its commercial debut, thanks to Pirelli Cables and Systems (Lexington, SC). Pirelli has unveiled a soliton module for its new 128-channel OC-192 (10-Gbit/sec) TeraMux dense wavelength-division multiplexing (dwdm) system. Soliton transmission has been the subject of laboratory experiments for some time, chiefly because of its promise to transmit signals over long distances while resisting chromatic dispersion. As previously reported in Lightwave (see April 1998, page 1), MCI described a trial of the Pirelli technology in a post-deadline paper at this year`s Conference on Optical Fiber Communications.
