Global Crossing Ltd. (Hamilton, Bermuda) began transmitting voice and data communications through its Atlantic Crossing (AC-1) undersea fiber-optic system, which links the United States and the United Kingdom. Service to Germany is expected in November. In addition, Global Crossing and its Japanese partners, Marubeni Corp. and kdd-scs, announced completion of financing for construction of an ultrahigh-capacity, digital fiber-optic cable linking the United States and Japan. The project, called Pacific Crossing (PC-1), is planned to begin initial service in the first quarter of 2000. The contract for supplying the 21,000-km fiber-optic cable was awarded to Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd. (Morristown, NJ), a subsidiary of Tyco International Ltd. (Hamilton, Bermuda). Global Crossing also signed with Tyco to begin construction of its Pan-American Crossing (pac) cable, connecting California, Mexico, and Panama. pac will also be networked together with PC-1 and Mid-Atlantic Crossing (mac), which connects the eastern United States, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and Panama.
