Bell Communications Research, Morristown, NJ, has a new sonet planning tool with wavelength-division multiplexing (wdm) planning functionality. The device is part of a collection of software tools intended to analyze traffic demands, network elements, equipment costs, and survivability of next-generation networks. The new tool is designed to help network operators evaluate their current use of sonet/wdm systems and investigate the cost-justification for their deployment. Separate Planning Workbench tools are available for sonet, Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (sdh), atm, and frame-relay technologies.
