16 June 2003 Murray Hill, NJ Lightwave -- Lucent Technologies is gaining traction with independent telecommunications companies in the United States through resellers, such as Graybar, who are reselling products from the company's Metropolis DMX Access Multiplexer family, a suite of next-generation SONET products.

The most recent Metropolis DMX sales included agreements with Otelco, based in Alabama, Progressive Rural in Georgia, and Warwick Valley Telephone of New York. These customers plan to use DMX to increase network capacity, and offer faster, more sophisticated services.

Otelco, offering communications services such as telephone, cable television, Internet, and long distance service in North Central Alabama, uses DMX to ensure its quality high speed services.

Progressive Rural Telephone Co-op Inc., which provides local service to more than 5,800 subscribers in five middle Georgia counties, is deploying DMX to increase capacity and offer new services to customers.

Warwick Valley Telephone, a full-service residential and business telecommunications provider in the New York and New Jersey region, is using DMX to provide protected high-speed data services to its customers.

Through its Global Business Partner organization, Lucent works with regional resellers to sell Metropolis DMX and its other optical products to customers that its direct sales force does not serve. These customers may include local and state governments, independent telephone companies, Internet service providers and alternative service providers.

The Metropolis DMX family includes the DMX Access Multiplexer for central office and large enterprise applications, the DMXpress for customer premises applications, DMXtend, for enterprise and loop access applications, and DMXplore, available in July, to deliver next-generation SONET services economically right to the customer's premises. All provide compatible next-generation SONET functionality and when used together, the products in the portfolio create an end-to-end solution that allows carriers to offer faster, more sophisticated services while lowering operating costs. Providing a solid foundation for future bandwidth and service growth, the products also enables service providers to cost effectively migrate from existing TDM networks to data-aware packet networks.
