29 May 2003 Komaki, Japan Lightwave -- Fiber-optic component and subsystem manufacturer Santec Corp. today announced the addition of a wide-band variable optical attenuator (VOA) to its range of Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS)-based products.

Optimized for inline power leveling in WDM applications, the new VOA uses an industry standard epoxy-free and hermetically sealed coaxial package first introduced by Santec last fall.

"We have seen growing market acceptance for our MEMS VOA for narrowband applications, and now we are building on our success by extending our line to address broadband applications as well," explains Wonho Chong, director of marketing at Santec USA.

The attenuator is available in 20-, 30-, and 45-dB versions and operates using a low current, 0-5 V control signal.
