MAY 27, 2008 -- Kylia (search for Kylia) says its coherent receiver provides many advantages in a Polarization Division Multiplexed Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying (PDM-QPSK) application.

Kylia representatives say that PDM-QPSK is the most promising technology to enable the migration to higher data rates like 100 Gbits/sec. Its high tolerance to linear fiber effects makes PDM-QPSK a perfect candidate for the new modulation format, they claim. At the receiver end, a coherent receiver is needed for reading PDM-QPSK.

The Kylia coherent receiver--dubbed "Mint-2x8"--is a dual-polarisation coherent mixer. Mint-2x8 mixes a signal with a local oscillator and exhibits four output ports per polarization. Each port is offset from the previous one by 90 °. Because it knows the local oscillator amplitude and phase, Mint-2x8 enables the recovery of signal characteristics.

Totally passive, Mint-2x8 can reach a typical offset precision up to +/- 1 °. Mint-2x8 supplies the in-phase and in-quadrature along all the C+L band.
