FEBRUARY 12, 2009 - Gigacom says the use of expanded beam technology makes its D-sub EBOSA connector ideal for rough environments and less sensitive to dust, vibrations, and temperature changes.

FEBRUARY 12, 2009 -- GigaCom today announced a new product designed to expand the use of fiber optics in harsh environments. The D-sub EBOSA is an expanded beam insert for the D-sub connector. According to the company, it converts the standard D-sub to a robust fibre optical connector.

Expanded beam technology makes this connector ideal in rough environments and less sensitive to dust, vibrations, and temperature changes.

Expanded beam connection is not a commonly used technology; traditionally
It has been used in military, avionics, automotive, broadcasting, and heavy-industry applications, but Gigacom says it has merged two different technologies using only standard components to meet increasing demands from a variety of new markets, applications, and customers. The EBOSA insert can be used with standard D-sub connectors, DIN 41612, and will soon also be available with MIL-C-38999 size 12 and 16.

Gigacom says the D-sub EBOSA will change the use of expanded beam technology and open new possibilities to use fiber-optic communications where it was unable to be used before.

The company will demonstrate the EBOSA next month at OFC/NFOEC, in Hall E, Stand 3345.
