DWDM boost for Italy's 3G broadband network

Dec. 1, 2002

Marconi has delivered 300 DWDM optical systems to Vodafone Omnitel (VO) for its broadband mobile 3G network in Italy.

The supplier says its technology will enable VO to light almost 12,000km of fibre-based infrastructure, connecting all major Italian cities. The agreement will combine the granularity of SDH technology with the broadband volume capacity of DWDM.

Giorgio Bertolina, executive chairman of Marconi in Italy, said, "It is more important than ever to ensure clients capitalise on their investment and infrastructure".

The order includes photonics line terminals (PLTs), amplifiers (PLAs) and add/drops (PLDs). The PLx family is a flexible, fully managed DWDM line system with add/drop capability for long-haul networks.

The DWDM layer, which supports 2.5 and 10Gbit/s, will enable VO to upgrade to a capacity of 80 channels for 10Gbit/s and to meet likely demand from 3G services.

·Marconi has launched ViPr, a network appliance that enables military and government personnel to create secure multimedia comms between distant locations, and over high-speed encrypted circuits.
