MARCH 8, 2007 -- Original design manufacturer (ODM) TXP Corp. (search for TXP) has announced the shipment of its first BPON optical network terminal (ONT) units to "a major original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and a Tier 1 carrier," according to a company statement. The ONT technology terminates the passive optical network at the home or business location and enables integrated voice, video, and high-speed Internet access. Both single-family unit (SFU) and multiple-dwelling unit (MDU4) models were reportedly included in the shipment.

President and chief executive officer Michael C. Shores calls the shipments -- the first for the company since it acquired the ONT product line from Siemens -- "a major milestone," adding, "These orders also validate our two-pronged strategy of pursuing both carriers and OEMs."

Shores says that major systems vendors and carriers are following a path similar to the one blazed by the DSL market by investigating OEM sourcing for cost-effective, time-sensitive ONT devices that can operate over a range of networks.

"This new ONT business has the potential to dramatically expand our photonics business and we are extremely excited about the prospects for this business, given the massive expenditures planned by the carriers as they role out new 'triple-play' and 'fiber-to-the-home' services nationwide," he concludes.
