NOVEMBER 27, 2007 -- Qwest Communications International Inc. (search for Qwest) has announced a three-year contract with the Government of the District of Columbia to deliver high-speed Internet services for a fiber-optic telecommunications network supporting the district's government agencies.

The contract is for Qwest Metro Optical Ethernet (QMOE), a service that will provide a Gigabit Ethernet connection among district government locations. The service is capable of providing LAN-to-LAN connectivity between two or more customer locations and combines the power of Ethernet and optical technologies across metropolitan area networks to provide low-cost, scalable, and secure bandwidth, the carrier says. The service can be used for data applications -- such as data-file transfer, Internet access, and off-site data storage -- and access to hosting, outsourced mail and file server service, and outsourced application services.

"Qwest has provided Internet services to the District government for several years," said Tom Richards, executive vice president, Qwest Business Markets Group. "We are pleased to extend that relationship through this contract and provide scalable and secure bandwidth for the District as it lays the foundation for all its government IT services for the 21st century and beyond."
