Avago Technologies extends 850-nm VCSEL Technology to 10 Gbits/sec
APRIL 19, 2007 -- Avago Technologies (search for Avago Technologies) has announced the completion of full Telcordia GR-468-CORE qualification of its next-generation 850-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (search for VCSEL). These VCSELs are currently in volume production for use in its higher speed fiber-optic products.
III-V technologies such as VCSELs play a key role in assuring supply, reliability, and high quality in fiber-optic product manufacturing, say company representatives. Products including 10-Gigabit Ethernet and 8-Gbit/sec Fibre Channel transceivers and 6.25-Gbit/sec parallel optics transmitters based on Avago's next-generation VCSELs are sampling now with commercial release scheduled for later this year.
By providing its own 10-Gbit/sec VCSEL source, Avago believes it is well-positioned to continue its leadership position in the communications and storage industry. "Our 10-Gbit VCSEL technology has been proven for extended temperature ranges to support demanding customer applications and enable denser systems," contends Tim Gallagher, Avago's vice president of III-V. "Furthermore, Avago's integrated fabrication facilities enable cost reductions and our manufacturing strategies ensure assurance of supply," he says.
Avago confirms it has R&D capabilities in several III-V technologies, including VCSELs, FP lasers, DFB lasers, and uncooled EML lasers.
