Building Broadband: altafiber and Avondale Development Corporation strike Wi-Fi pact; Bluepeak expands fiber internet to Yukon, Oklahoma

altafiber, Bluepeak, Comcast, Fidium, GoNetspeed, IdeaTek, Kinetic, Stellar Broadband and TDS Telecom are all expanding broadband in various communities through venture capital and state funding sources.

In this latest special Memorial Day Weekend issue of Building Broadband, we’re tracking new broadband deployments from altafiber, Bluepeak, Comcast, Fidium, GoNetspeed, IdeaTek, Kinetic, Stellar Broadband and TDS Telecom.

altafiber and Avondale Development Corporation strike Wi-Fi pact
The Avondale Development Corporation, which represents the largest African-American neighborhood in Cincinnati, has struck a partnership with altafiber to bring free public high-speed Wi-Fi along the Reading Road business district as part of a broader effort to ignite economic growth and improve the quality of life for Avondale residents. altafiber now delivers public Wi-Fi in the business corridor of Avondale along Reading Road. Connected locations include the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio, the Cincinnati NAACP, the Avondale Town Center, and the Avondale Business Center. Hirsch Recreation Center will also receive public Wi-Fi soon.

Bluepeak expands fiber internet to Yukon, Oklahoma
Bluepeak is extending its fiber internet service to homes and businesses across Yukon. As part of the company’s ongoing buildout in Oklahoma, the project will offer residential speeds up to 5 Gbps and up to 10 Gbps for businesses. Work is underway on this much-anticipated infrastructure upgrade to enhance the city’s technological capabilities and support local business growth. Engineering and pre-construction efforts are complete, with construction set to begin before the end of the month. In 2025, Oklahoma remains a priority focus, with fiber expansion projects currently underway in Okmulgee, Muskogee, Cushing, Lawton, Bartlesville, Shawnee, Stillwater, Midwest City, and now Yukon—marking their second city in the OKC metro area and 16th expansion market in Oklahoma.

Comcast kicks off broadband build to 4,500 Bedford, VA locations
Comcast has begun construction to connect more than 4,500 homes and businesses in Bedford, VA, to symmetrical Internet. This network expansion will enhance digital infrastructure, promote economic growth, and position residents and local businesses for success in an increasingly digital world. The project brings Internet, mobile, entertainment, and security services from Xfinity and Comcast Business to residents and businesses for the first time. This summer, the first homes and businesses will be connected to Xfinity and Comcast Business products and services.

Fidium expands fiber access to new locations in Maine and Vermont
Fidium has expanded its multi-gig, symmetrical speed internet service to new towns in Maine and Vermont. In Maine, Fidium has expanded its multi-gig internet service to Fort Fairfield to more than 1,600 homes and businesses. Over in Vermont, Fidium is equipping EnosburghSheldon, and parts of Berkshire with a fiber network that will serve more than 3,200 homes and businesses. Today, more than 134,000 Vermont homes and businesses have access to Fidium, including more than 14,000 Franklin County homes and businesses across Enosburgh, Sheldon, Bakersfield, East Fairfield, Fairfax, Fairfield, Fletcher, Georgia, Saint Albans and Swanton.

GoNetspeed makes fiber service available in four Vermont communities
GoNetspeed has completed the fiber build-out in three Vermont towns: Benson, Castleton, Hubbardton, and Sudbury. It's privately funded, with a combined $3.5 million investment in its expanded Vermont network, delivering more than 2,160 homes and businesses access to high-speed service.

Currently, eight communities throughout the state have access to GoNetspeed’s service, including Benson, Castleton, Cornwall, Hubbardton, Orwell, Shoreham, Sudbury, and Whiting, along with many communities that are well on their way to having access to GoNetspeed’s fiber internet.

IdeaTek is bringing gigabit fiber internet to Oakley, Kansas
IdeaTek is investing $500,000 to deliver a fiber network to Oakley, Kansas, enabling up to 2.5 Gbps. Construction is underway in the southern part of Oakley, with plans to complete the build later this summer.

Kinetic Fiber lights 1,600 Thomas County, Ga., residents with fiber broadband
Kinetic and Thomas County have completed a $13.3 million fiber optic expansion project in Thomas County, Georgia. The Thomas County project has been funded through more than $6.8 million from the State Fiscal Recovery Fund (SFRF) and a county match of $1.3 million. To complete the project, Kinetic invested $5.1 million of its funds to bolster Thomas County’s digital infrastructure. Kinetic, the State of Georgia, and 25 counties have partnered to invest over $354 million in Georgia broadband infrastructure development since the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) was enacted in 2021. This expansion was part of Kinetic's strategic plan, where more than 5,000 locations built in Thomas County are now eligible for improved fiber internet services. This project was administered through the State of Georgia and Thomas County. The American Rescue Plan Act State Local Fiscal Recovery Fund supported the project in whole or part, a federal award granted to the State of Georgia by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
