Building Broadband: Hawaiian Telcom’s Maui build brings it closer to its fiber‑enabled state goal

In this latest issue of Building Broadband, we’re tracking Hawaii’s ongoing statewide fiber deployment, as well as deployments from Brightspeed, Comcast, Conexon Connect, Fidium, Gateway Fiber, Peltbeam, Ripple Fiber, and WVT Fiber.

Hawaiian Telcom, Brightspeed, Comcast, Conexon Connect, Fidium, Gateway Fiber, Peltbeam, Ripple Fiber, and WVT Fiber are leveraging public and private funding sources to expand broadband services. 

Hawaiian Telcom’s Maui build brings it closer to its fiber‑enabled state goal
Hawaiian Telcom has fully fiber-enabled Maui, becoming the fourth island in Hawai‘i to reach this milestone as the company works toward making Hawai‘i the first fully fiber‑enabled state in the nation by the end of this year. Maui residents and businesses can now connect directly to Hawaiian Telcom’s fiber network, bringing symmetrical broadband service delivered over fiber straight to their homes and offices. Hawaiian Telcom first announced its statewide $1.7 billion fiber build commitment in January 2025. The company is now approximately 88 percent toward its goal and remains on track to meet it by 2026. 

Brightspeed wraps ninth North Carolina fiber build
Brightspeed has completed 60 percent of its fiber network build in North Carolina. The fiber network reaches more than 736,000 homes and businesses, and another 506,000 locations are set to be fiber-enabled once construction is complete. It has completed network construction in Aulander, Boonville, Kernersville, Lake Waccamaw, Mamie, Sunbury, Wallace, Winton, and Yadkinville. Brightspeed's North Carolina expansion is supported by $90.6 million in federal Broadband Equity and Access Deployment (BEAD) funding to build an additional 13,739 locations. Also, the company was awarded more than $244 million in grants by the N.C. Department of Information Technology's (NCDIT) Division of Broadband and Digital Equity under the state's Completing Access to Broadband (CAB) and Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) programs to add 109,689 locations, boosting the company's private multi-billion-dollar investment.

Comcast lights up Lake County, Florida’s broadband market
Comcast is connecting thousands of unserved homes and businesses in Lake County to multi-gigabit, symmetrical Internet. Construction will begin this summer to expand the network to more than 2,900 locations, bringing high-speed Internet access to them for the very first time. This project was made possible by a public-private partnership with the state of Florida’s Broadband Opportunity Program and includes locations in and around the communities of Tavares, Astatula, Eustis, and Groveland. The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2026. Comcast’s most recent expansion to Lake County is part of the company’s latest investment in Florida, which also includes expansions to Bradford County, Nassau County, and The Villages. In 2025, Comcast achieved a record-breaking year of growth in Florida by expanding access to more than 120,000 additional homes and businesses across the state.

Conexon Connect launches latest fiber broadband project in Florida's Panhandle
Conexon Connect announced its next high-speed fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network to deliver reliable internet access in rural northwest Florida. Building on years of successful partnerships across the Southeast and Midwest, the new network will support Florida Panhandle communities with the speeds and reliability needed to power economic development and new opportunities for education, career advancement, telehealth, and more. This new project marks the sixth FTTH network built in collaboration with Florida electric cooperatives. 

Fidium adds Glendale, N.H., to its growing fiber footprint
Fidium has expanded its fiber internet service in Glendale, NH, bringing new fiber‑to‑the‑home (FTTH) access to more than 2,100 residents and businesses. With this expansion, residents can now access Fidium’s 5-Gig and up to 8-Gig fiber internet plans, paired with next-generation WiFi 7 technology. Fidium representatives will be visiting the community over the coming weeks to share more information about service options and availability, participating in local events, and stopping by individual homes and businesses with fiber access. Over  400,000 homes and businesses in New Hampshire can benefit from Fidium’s speeds, including fiber service areas in Center HarborFranklinGilfordLaconia and Meredith

Gateway Fiber breaks ground on its Bismarck fiber network
Gateway Fiber has begun construction on its new fiber internet network in Bismarck, North Dakota, building on the company’s existing footprint in Fargo. Construction crews have begun work in select areas. They will expand the neighborhood-by-neighborhood approach to bring fiber-to-the-home internet service to more locations across the community over the coming months. Customers in these areas should expect service later this summer. The company expects to activate its first customers in the second half of 2026. As construction progresses, residents will receive door hangers with details about start dates and where to call with questions.

Peltbeam completes phase one of its wireless fiber technology in the City of Adelanto
The City of Adelanto completed its initial deployment of patented wireless fiber technology by Peltbeam. Utilizing proprietary Wi-Fi repeater technology, Peltbeam delivers high-speed wireless connectivity to underserved and disadvantaged areas of the city without the need for costly and time-intensive fiber-trenching, engineering, or permitting. This initial deployment provides free outdoor wireless coverage across select public and residential areas. Identified using Peltbeam’s proprietary Pre-Deployment AI Maptool, installation sites in this phase include Adelanto City Hall, the Public Works building, the skate park, the community center, the senior center adjacent to City Hall, and several surrounding neighborhoods. A standout feature of the deployment is the integration of solar-powered repeater nodes, demonstrating Peltbeam’s ability to extend wireless fiber capabilities to off-grid and energy-constrained environments.

Ripple Fiber sets $80M fiber expansion plan for Arizona
Ripple Fiber has hatched plans to extend its fiber broadband service to Arizona. Investing over $80 million in the initial build, Ripple Fiber will deliver high-speed fiber internet service to over 50,000 homes and businesses. Construction will kick off in Oro Valley later this month, followed by neighboring Sahuarita in early June. Additional municipalities will be announced as the project progresses. Ripple Fiber expects to launch service for its first customers in Arizona later this summer. Residential packages start at $40, with options scaling up to 8 Gbps to fit every household’s needs. Plans at 1 Gbps and above include the eero Pro 7 router and free internet backup, while multi-gigabit packages also include a 3-Year Price Lock.

WVT Fiber enhances the Town of Warwick, NY’s government and law enforcement connectivity
WVT Fiber entered a partnership with the Town of Warwick, New York and the Warwick Police Department to deliver fiber Internet and VoIP services to local government and law enforcement facilities. The upgrade will provide faster, more reliable connectivity to support town operations, emergency response efforts, and public services for Warwick residents. Warwick Town Hall and the Police Department will benefit from ultra-fast fiber Internet speeds, improved call clarity, enhanced network security and greater reliability during emergencies. The upgrades will help local officials and first responders better serve the community through seamless communication and improved access to digital resources. The partnership builds on WVT Fiber’s continued investment in the Warwick Valley region, including upcoming service to the Kings Estates housing development. To date, over 375 miles of fiber infrastructure have been built throughout WVT Fiber’s service area.
