Building Broadband: Norwood Light Broadband sets HFC to FTTH transition

Norwood Light Broadband, Dobson Fiber, Fidium, GoNetspeed, Spectrum, Vero Fiber, and Xfinity are expanding broadband in various communities through a mix of venture capital and state funding sources.

In this latest issue of Building Broadband, we’re highlighting how municipally owned Norwood Light Broadband is transitioning its network from HFC to fiber. Joining Norwood Light Broadband are Dobson Fiber, Fidium, GoNetspeed, Spectrum, Vero Fiber, and Xfinity.

Norwood Light Broadband sets HFC to FTTH transition
Norwood Light Broadband, the broadband division of Norwood Light Department, has begun its transition from a hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) system to a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network. This upgrade will deliver gigabit internet speeds directly to every home and business it serves in Norwood, Mass. As it moves forward with this exciting upgrade, Norwood Light Broadband will also begin phasing out its traditional video service. The decision to exit video was not made lightly. Still, it reflects the rapidly changing landscape of how people consume television today: escalating programming costs, ongoing rate increases from broadcasters, and the growing popularity of streaming services have made it increasingly difficult to invest in costly video infrastructure upgrades.

Dobson Fiber commits to expanding fiber in Cache, Oklahoma
Dobson Fiber announces another multi-million-dollar expansion of its fiber internet offering in Cache, Oklahoma. Dobson Fiber currently serves 57 communities across Oklahoma and five communities in Arkansas. The company continues to expand its high-speed broadband network in both rural and urban areas, delivering internet speeds up to 10 Gbps for residential customers and up to 400 Gbps for business customers.

Fidium’s investment to upgrade its network in Maine is part of its broader commitment to strengthening the state’s digital infrastructure. More than 490,000 homes and businesses statewide can now benefit from Fidium’s 21,000‑mile all‑fiber network.

GoNetspeed kicks off $4.5M Parlin, New Jersey fiber expansion
GoNetspeed has begun construction in Parlin, bringing another Northeast community closer to reliable, high-speed Fiber Internet. Backed by a fully funded $4.5 million investment, GoNetspeed will bring its fiber network to more than 3,100 homes and businesses. With construction actively progressing, GoNetspeed anticipates connecting its first Parlin residents and businesses this winter. Continuing to build momentum in New Jersey, GoNetspeed is rapidly expanding its footprint across its 11th state through an initial $110 million investment. Parlin joins South River and the Rahway area, where construction is already underway to soon bring its fiber network to thousands of New Jerseyans across the state. Following recent expansions announced in East Brunswick and Old Bridge, many more New Jersey households and businesses are well on their way to gaining access to GoNetspeed’s upgraded connectivity.

The expansion was funded in part by a Realizing Opportunity with Broadband Infrastructure Networks (ROBIN) Broadband Grant, a joint effort between Spectrum and the Michigan High-Speed Internet Office (MIHI) to deliver high-speed internet to unserved communities. This project is supported, in part, by federal award number CPFFN0190 awarded to The State of Michigan by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
