Mark began his career as a telecommunications market analyst and consultant in 1982 with Northern Business Information where he started its transmission research business, which included fiber optics, wire and cable, carrier gear, and central office equipment. In 1986, he founded Trans-Formation, which specialized in studying transmission equipment markets including DWDM, FTTx, digital cross-connects, DSLAMs, add/drop muxes, digital loop carrier, microwave, and satellite. In 2000, CIR acquired Trans-Formation and Mark became its vice president of optical networking research; he was director of research on telecom markets, both on the system and components level, including the access, metro, and long-haul sectors.
In 2003, Mark co-founded Telecom Pragmatics, where he was head writer and director of research until 2012. At the company, he provided large proprietary studies for numerous suppliers, including competitive and strategic analyses, and also product development direction. At Telecom Pragmatics, he also oversaw production of various monthly strategy letters on topics such as high-capacity fiber optics, optical switching/transport, fiber to the premises, and wireless backhaul. At LightCounting, Mark focuses on demand-side analyses of telecom optical networking equipment and services as well as competitive analyses of vendors.
