Sumitomo Electric Lightwave’s splicing solutions align around automation and simplicity

Sumitomo Electric Lightwave continues to raise the bar for fiber splicing, and its latest offerings are no exception.

During the recent Fiber Connect 2026 show, Lightwave’s sister publication ISE caught up with Andrew Degidio, senior technical manager for Sumitomo Electric Lightwave, to talk about three splicing platforms: Core Alignment Fusion Splicer, Active Clad Alignment Splicer, and the Quantum Fusion Splicer.

With a focus on automation and simplicity, each splicer supports multiple fiber modes to streamline the splicing process.

Targeting various fiber types, the Core Alignment Fusion Splicer features patented dual heaters, a cleaver, and a single-jacket fiber remover to reduce production timelines.

As part of its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) solution, the active clad alignment splicer can distinguish between single- and multimode fiber and includes an automated cleaver for hard-to-reach areas.

Finally, the Quantum Fusion Splicer supports 1-16 fibers. And while the Quantum Fusion Splicer has plenty of automated capabilities, it also features a manual option and a nano-tune that evaluates the fiber end face and adjusts splice parameters as needed.
