June 2, 2005 Richardson, TX -- Tiscali International Network (TINet) has deployed Chiaro Networks' Enstara core-router platform as part of an upgrade to the carrier's international IP/MPLS backbone. Chiaro says the deployment is the first since ECI Telecom became the exclusive global distributor of the platform.
"ECI's strong sales channels and contacts, plus Enstara's innovative technology, were the winning combination that clinched the sale," asserts Ken Lewis, Chiaro's CEO.
According to a press release, TINet interconnects 15 European countries and the US across a Tier-1 IP/MPLS network. In late 2003, the carrier says it began soliciting proposals for its plan to expand its network and move to next-generation core technology. The carrier says its requirements for core router technologies included the ability to support 10- Gbit/sec interfaces, with scalable support for the future; high availability and support for in-service upgrades; interoperability with existing equipment and network management tools; IPv6 support, and support for virtual routers. The carrier says it evaluated vendors for its network backbone through extensive laboratory and production-network validation, including interoperability of routing protocols in a multi-vendor network, before choosing the platform.
The carrier says the Enstara systems, installed in Amsterdam, were an extension of its existing 10G core, touching other major EU and US cities. The installation was overseen by support teams from both Chiaro and ECI. The two installed systems are currently operational and carrying live traffic, according to the release.
"Tiscali and other carriers are facing enormous pressure to deliver 99.999% availability, the flexibility to support more and increasingly complex services, and advanced features such as L2/L3 VPN functionality," concludes Lewis. "Chiaro and ECI look forward to delivering on these promises in Tiscali's network."
