Transition Networks introduces 10/100/1000 copper to fiber converter

1 May 2003 Las Vegas, NV Lightwave -- Transition Networks announced this week at Networld + Interop the introduction of a 10/100/1000 media converter that converts the electrical signal of a 10/100/1000 Ethernet signal from copper to fiber, providing a low-cost integration option for network managers who want to migrate from 10/100 networks to Gigabit Ethernet. Gigabit only switches can now be connected to 10/100 networks without the need to upgrade the 10/100 side, allowing network managers to add new equipment gradually.

The 10/100/1000 media converter's fiber interface runs at 1000Base speeds, which enables users to connect Gigabit ports on fiber switches, explain company representatives. Fiber connectivity options include SX optics and LX dual fiber with distances up to 65 km or single fiber up to 40 km. In addition to the standard 220 meters with standard SX optics, Transition Networks also offers a proprietary solution that will allow users to transmit up to 2 km over multimode fiber.

"Utilizing Transition's 10/100/1000BaseT to 1000BaseSX or LX converter in a Gigabit backbone affords users the opportunity to upgrade their networks to Gigabit speeds over any media without giving up any distance," contends Bill Schultz, vice president of marketing at Transition Networks. "This can be done in an economical manner when they want it and where they want it," he adds.

The Transition Networks 10/100/1000 converter offers several features including:
• AutoNegotiation support on copper and the ability to force a particular mode of operation. The fiber interface supports AutoNegotiation or the user can force half or full duplex.
• Autocross on copper port
• Link Pass Through ensures that the link failure is identified by a device on the remote end by simulating a link loss across the connection including fiber
• Chassis card version will feature full SNMP manageability. An Optional 1000BaseSX/LX signal tap provides a RJ-45 1000BaseTX sniffer port of the TX or RX on the fiber port. This will further simplify network monitoring maintenance and troubleshooting as well as eliminate the need for costly fiber taps

Transition's 10/100/1000 converter is available in two versions. Standalone and The Point System chassis card to fit any CPSMCxxxx chassis cabinets.

The first 10/100/1000 models for sampling will be available in June. Full production commences in July.
