INRANGE announces next-generation optical networking solutions for enterprise and metro SANs

Aug. 27, 2001--INRANGE Technologies, a Provider of scalable storage networking solutions, announced the general availability of the IN-VSN Spectrum 1000, 2000, and 3000 family of optical networking platforms.

INRANGE Technologies (Nasdaq: INRG), a Provider of scalable storage networking solutions, announced the general availability of the IN-VSN Spectrum 1000, 2000, and 3000 family of optical networking platforms, bringing users greater flexibility in leveraging fiber optic bandwidth to extend storage networks across campus, enterprise, and metropolitan area networks.

The combination of optical networking and storage networking technologies is key in delivering true "virtual storage networks" that are not limited by traditional geographic boundaries. The company has a base of more than 20,000 storage-over-optical channels deployed by INRANGE worldwide, supporting storage applications such as remote data mirroring and distributed Storage Area Networks (SANs). With its IN-VSN family, INRANGE claims to be the first and only vendor to offer truly integrated storage networking solutions -- anchored by its FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director -- that allow users extend storage from the network core, to the edge, to anywhere-any distance, over metro and wide area connections.

According to industry analyst Gartner, Inc., the optical networking market will surpass $16B by 2005, as enterprises demand the megaband throughput that fiber optic networks offer, not only in their buildings but also between disparate locations. The new Spectrum platforms can be used to route as many as 256 channels over a single fiber pair, connect locations 300 kilometers apart in the metro area, provide greater granularity in designing optical ring configurations, and support migration to higher-performance standards such as 10-Gigabit implementations of Fibre Channel and Ethernet.

The new Spectrum platforms are the result of INRANGE's partnership with ADVA Optical Networking and will be co-branded with ADVA. INRANGE has been selling optical solutions based on ADVA technology since 1995, and is contracted to provide field service and support for ADVA products deployed in North America by all channels through its direct sales and services organization, which has 625 field-based professionals worldwide.

Highlights of the New IN-VSN Spectrum Offerings:

The Spectrum 1000

Utilizing time division multiplexing (TDM) technology, the Spectrum 1000 aggregates up to 8 high-speed data, storage, voice, and video channels onto one fiber pair, supporting point-to-point configurations at distances up to 60 kilometers. The 1000 provides an economical upgrade path from ESCON to FICON, and lets users add/drop a single wavelength.

The Spectrum 2000

A highly scalable enterprise access platform, the Spectrum 2000 utilizes multiple technologies to aggregate up to 32 DWDM channels (or up to 256 services) onto one fiber pair, supporting both point-to-point and multi-point 'ring' configurations at distances up to 100 kilometers, and up to 200 kilometers with amplifiers. Spectrum 2000 is the next generation of INRANGE's successful Spectrum II optical platform and also supports Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and TDM technologies.

The Spectrum 3000

A carrier-class platform optimized for core metro networking, the Spectrum 3000 can aggregate 32 "protected" or 64 unprotected DWDM channels and supports point-to-point, linear add/drop, and ring configurations over distances of up to 300 kilometers with amplifiers.
