Tata Communications adds 40-Gbps to TGN-Atlantic undersea cable network

Tata Communications has inaugurated 40-Gbps services across its TGN-Atlantic undersea cable system from New York to London. The services are the result of a recent capacity upgrade using coherent communications technology from Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN).

The new services use the coherent 40G/100G capabilities of the Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform. Ciena expects this upgrade will be the first in a series that will see Tata Communications’ increase capacity across its global fiber-optic network. Tata currently operates more than 200,000 km of terrestrial network fiber and more than 500,000 km of submarine cable. In fact, Tata plans to add 40-Gbps to its link to Ashburn, VA, and the rest of Europe, Ciena reveals.

Alan Mauldin, research director at market research and analysis firm TeleGeography commented, "The compounding effect of demand growth requires carriers to make considerable investments to expand network capacity. Tata Communications' implementation of 40G technology on the company's trans-Atlantic system will play a key role in meeting customers' capacity requirements in a cost-effective manner.”
