Corning Cable Systems to display all-fiber access network offerings at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo
OCTOBER 22, 2009 -- Corning Cable Systems LLC, part of Corning Incorporated's Telecommunications segment, will feature its new Evolant technologies for all-fiber access networks (AFANs) through exhibits and hands-on demonstrations at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2009, Oct. 28-30 in Denver, CO.
Corning Cable Systems says innovations in deployment technologies combined with a new outside plant solution set enable multiple system operators (MSOs) to create AFANs at a cost comparable to hybrid fiber coax (HFC) -- claiming that reliable, scalable, next-generation bandwidth is possible with the traditional look and feel of cable television networks.
In its newly designed environmental exhibit (booth #3073), Corning Cable Systems will display the new segmented-split topology, following the passive optical path from the headend to the subscriber. The new AFAN setup will showcase the following:
- OptiTect compact local convergence point housing -- the primary connection point between the trunk and distribution cables, providing access to each customer and housing both splitters and WDM devices. This provides connectivity for up to 128 subscribers and will be shown in both aerial and low-profile pedestal applications
- OptiSheath UltraNAP branch-connected terminal -- works with the FlexNAP terminal distribution system to reduce road crossings and make the outside plant modular for AFANs
- OptiSheath UltraNAP Series-Connected Terminal -- also works with the FlexNAP system and allows users to daisy-chain up to three terminals together, all fed from one OptiTip multifiber connector. This provides shorter distribution cable lengths and is appropriate for cul-de-sacs or small areas not easily reached by the primary distribution cable
- FlexNAP terminal distribution system -- deploys optical fiber in outside plant distribution networks at faster speeds than traditional field installations. Compatible with both aerial and below-ground applications, the cable and network access points are tested and shipped as a complete distribution cable/terminal system
Visitors will also be able to see demonstrations of the OptiSplice fusion splicer product family and the new FuseFlex termination system, which features a "near zero-length" pigtail. The stub fiber installed in the FuseFlex connector is polished in the factory, which eliminates the need for field polishing, increases the quality of the termination, and reduces connector installation time.
