OCTOBER 23, 2009 -- Georgia Public Web has deployed a 40-channel, long-haul, multinode, interstate DWDM network utilizing the LightGAIN optical transport system from Optelian.

Georgia Public Web (GPW), a nonprofit facilities-based company providing Internet access and other telecom services to communities, carriers, and customers throughout Georgia, needed to upgrade a large multinode CWDM network to a higher-capacity DWDM network. After considering several vendors as well as the incumbent, GPW reportedly chose Optelian for its modular, flexible DWDM equipment base.

"Optelian has an excellent reputation for providing trouble-free optical transport systems and for providing comprehensive support before, during, and after the sale," says Jim Hendrickson, vice president and chief technology officer at GPW. "We spoke with people at Tier 1 and Tier 2 carriers who use Optelian products. Based on their recommendations, we felt the superior quality of Optelian systems and especially their ability to deliver on time was ideal for our requirements. It was mission critical for us to deploy a highly reliable system that could be installed expeditiously."

The 40-channel DWDM network spans more than 1,400 km and has 29 nodes. The system provides add/drop and regeneration capabilities. GPW is taking full advantage of LightGAIN's modular architecture. Plug-and-play transponders, amplifiers, dispersion compensation, and DWDM modules support the service and optical requirements at each site. Optelian claims its any-rate 2.7- and 10-Gbps tunable transponders provide "significant cost savings" for sparing requirements.

"We are extremely pleased to be working with a highly respected service provider like GPW," says Dave Mills, vice president, sales at Optelian. "GPW has built a world-class optical transport network that delivers a wide range of services throughout Georgia and North Florida. The LightGAIN platform will allow GPW to seamlessly and non-disruptively scale future services as their customers' demands increase."

"The service we received from Optelian was outstanding," adds GPW's Hendrickson. "We had two lengthy segments in the network that were hot cut-overs. Together with Optelian, we were able to turn the routes up without any service impacting outages and adhere to our committed service dates. We received outstanding technical support from Optelian from day one. They have a can-do attitude and work hard to ensure that the job is done right, and on time."

Optelian is displaying its LightGAIN optical transport system in booth 2820 during Supercomm 2009 in Chicago, Oct. 21-23.
