JULY 29, 2009 -- Reportedly the first application of Raman amplifiers to long-distance DWDM, the upgrade powers a 1,100-mile unregenerated span on NLR's 1,600-Gbps optical backbone network.

JULY 29, 2009 -- LightRiver Technologies Inc. (search Lightwave for LightRiver Technologies), a provider of transport technologies, has completed the installation, test, and turn-up of an upgrade to National LambdaRail's (NLR) nationwide 1,600-Gbps optical backbone network. NLR's cutting-edge network connects network islands for the U.S. research and education community to provide instant access to information and enable collaboration on a national scale.

The 6,750-mile upgrade included 143 DWDM shelves with more than 200 transponder cards and extended the network to 116 locations, including Los Angeles; Seattle; Chicago; Washington, DC; and Jacksonville. The Los-Angeles-to-Seattle span featured the first application of Raman amplifiers to long-distance DWDM, which allowed LightRiver to implement the 1,100-mile span without costly regenerators.

"What impressed us about LightRiver throughout this challenging project was their technical know-how with wide-area networking and DWDM and their ability to scale to a project of such magnitude," says Tom West, chief executive office, NLR. "LightRiver was extremely easy to do business with, quickly resolved the challenges presented by this large network and, most importantly, finished on time and on budget."

"We are proud to be part of such a big undertaking and firmly believe that the investment will pay dividends in the research and educational communities increased capacity and speed and greater reliability and flexibility," says Glenn Johansen, chief executive officer, LightRiver Technologies.
