April 18, 2006 Fremont, CA -- Huawei-3Com has selected Ample Communications' Harrier 10/100/1000 Multiport Ethernet MAC silicon to provide Ethernet aggregation for its mid-range and high-end routers and switches. According to a press release, shipment of Huawei-3Com switch line cards using Ample's Harrier-24 devices began in the fourth quarter of 2005.
"Huawei-3Com's selection of Harrier is an important indication of the widening recognition of Harrier as a tool for lowering Gigabit Ethernet network costs, while increasing density and incorporating the required intelligence to support advanced services," remarks Mathew Steinberg, director of business development for Ample Communications. "Through its incorporation into Huawei-3Com's network equipment, the benefits of Harrier's intelligence will now extend to new network infrastructure projects underway in Asia and other parts of the world."
Ample says its Harrier-24 allows Huawei-3Com to take advantage of Ethernet's "bursty nature" by applying statistical multiplexing techniques to aggregate a larger numbers of ports, using the Harrier devices' "intelligent oversubscription technology." According to Ample, since the Harrier family is "pin-for-pin compatible," additional Harrier designs providing both oversubscribed and line-rate Ethernet aggregation can be incorporated into future Huawei-3Com designs with minimal engineering changes.
"Harrier provides us with high-density Ethernet aggregation, combined with superior intelligent oversubscription technology to insure data integrity in network systems that use statistical multiplexing," comments a spokesperson for Huawei-3Com's R&D Department. "This solution helps us keep system costs low while providing a reliable, feature-rich product offering for a wide range of applications."
