Telmex Chile to build ROADM-enabled optical network

Oct. 18, 2010
OCTOBER 18, 2010 -- Tellabs says that Telmex Chile will build a new optical network using the Tellabs 7100 Optical Transport System and the Tellabs 7100 Nano Optical Transport System. Based on DWDM reconfigurable optical add/drop (ROADM) technology, the new network will be designed to increase reliability and improve Telmex Chile’s ability to meet capacity demands.

OCTOBER 18, 2010 -- Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB) says that Telmex Chile will build a new optical network using the Tellabs 7100 Optical Transport System and the Tellabs 7100 Nano Optical Transport System. Based on DWDM reconfigurable optical add/drop (ROADM) technology, the new network will be designed to increase reliability and improve Telmex Chile’s ability to meet capacity demands.

Raylex, a local partner, will aide in the network construction.

The new network aims to enable Telmex to offer more bandwidth to customers with less than one minute of downtime per year. Telmex will be able to deploy new services faster to better serve Telmex business and residential users, as well as allocate bandwidth on demand as needed during high traffic times, according to Tellabs.

"This is a first-of-its kind network in Chile that will enable us to transport more bandwidth-intensive services where and when needed," said Francisco Sabioncello, technical management director at Telmex Chile. "This specific network design with Tellabs optical control plane will help us ensure intelligent redundancy capabilities to protect traffic during sudden failures such as earthquakes."

The network equipment will provide sophisticated reroute capabilities to ensure service even after multiple fiber cuts. Tellabs says its control plane technology and its optical directionless capabilities will add the intelligence needed to enable fast protection and restoration of traffic.
