NTT Com increases Japan-U.S. backbone speed to 300 Gbps
NTT Communications (NTT Com) has increased the data transmission speed of its Global IP Network between the United States and Japan to 300Gbps, enhancing the company’s Tier-1 transpacific IP connectivity.
FEBRUARY 10, 2010 -- NTT Communications (NTT Com) has increased the data transmission speed of its Global IP Network between the United States and Japan to 300 Gbps, enhancing the company’s Tier 1 transpacific IP connectivity.
Traffic between the U.S. and Japan accounts for some of the heaviest data volumes handled by carriers with global IP backbones, according to a company representative. The increased capacity of NTT Com’s U.S.-Japan route will enable the company to respond to growing demand for higher-capacity transmissions between the two countries.
The growing use of broadband and the rising popularity of video content led to a tripling of NTT Com’s bandwidth in 2009 compared to 1997, the year when the company launched 45-Mbps service to support international Internet access for Japanese ISPs.
In 2000, the acquisition of Verio and its Tier 1 IP backbone enabled NTT Com to raise its U.S.-Japan bandwidth to 1 Gbps. A year later, NTT Com introduced network service-level agreements (SLA); and in the same year, the company expanded its IP backbone to the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Australia. In 2002, the network’s data transmission speed was increased to 5 Gbps, or 100 times faster than the 1997 level.
In 2005, NTT Com became the first network provider to enhance its backbone by measuring network-latency variability with a jitter-type SLA (also introduced for IPv6 in July 2009). The NTT Com Global IP Network, in December 2006, was rerouted with minimal delay following a destructive undersea earthquake off Taiwan. In 2008, the company introduced a traffic analysis system to help IP network operators monitor network traffic to detect and report traffic anomalies.
