DECEMBER 11, 2007 -- M2 Optics (search for M2 Optics) today announced a new line of optical couplers, splitters, and WDM products packaged in compact 2U modules that require 55% less space than standard LGX modules , say company representatives.

M2 FiberSplit Micro Modules are functionally equivalent to LGX optical couplers, splitters, and WDMs, says the company, but they feature 2U packages to allow 20 modules to fit into a 19-in rack, resulting in a 55% reduction in rack space per module. According to the company, the micro modules (0.75"W x 5.1"L x 2U high) come in a range of coupling and connector configurations with various connector interfaces.

Using the new devices, customers can accommodate 20 single-width passive optical modules in a rack; existing LGX technology, by contrast, could only fit 12. The M2 FiberSplit Micro Modules come in 1x2 thru 1x8 splitters as well as CWDM and DWDM configurations and combinations operating in the 1310-nm, S-,C-, and L-bands. Applications include telecom, Passive Optical Networks (PON), LAN, CATV, and data distribution centers.

M2 FiberSplit Micro Modules are priced from $181 to $450 each, depending upon configuration. M2 Optics says that custom configurations are available.
