ADVA signs up Bahnhof, Media Broadcast for nationwide fiber-optic networks

ADVA Optical Networking has announced a pair of contract awards in Europe for use of its FSP 3000 platform in nationwide fiber-optic networks. Both Bahnhof in Sweden and Media Broadcast in Germany will use the packet-optical transport platform to improve the transmission capacity of their fiber-optic backbone networks.

In Sweden, the Bahnhof deployment will emphasize the FSP 3000's 100-Gbps and multi-degree ROADM capabilities. The ISP's network features 48 nodes in a ring topology. Bahnhof will position multi-degree ROADMs in 36 drop sites. Overall, the fiber-optic network links every city in the south of Sweden from Stockholm to Malmo, with additional routes to Copenhagen in Denmark as well as the Norwegian capital of Oslo.

In Germany, Media Broadcast will use the new capacity on its nationwide network to support the transport of data services, uncompressed high-quality video, and audio services for its media company customers. The ability to transport native video in uncompressed form on the physical layer simplifies video transmission, saves the cost of conversion, and removes associated signal degradation, ADVA says.

The ADVA FSP 3000 also will support Media Broadcast's requirements via multichannel audio digital interface (MADI) technology that can transmit up to 64 discrete digital audio signals integrated in the optical transport layer.

"Having the freedom to transport video and audio in its native format puts our customers in a fantastic position. It enables them to transmit content between production sites, event locations, and studios in the highest quality," said Daniel Wolbers, group manager, transport and infrastructure, at Media Broadcast. "We expect that the demand for uncompressed video transmission will increase further. That's why we decided to upgrade our backbone. Now we're prepared for the future and can continue to deliver brilliant performance according to the needs of our customers."

ADVA says that Media Broadcast has leveraged the ADVA FSP 3000 to build custom transport services, including the creation of new contribution networks for public broadcasters Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg and Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. The company also has supported the transmission of live Bundesliga games for Westdeutscher Rundfunk via the ADVA optical transport system.
