Fibernet, Calleva Park, UK, has completed its tanet (Total Area Network) high-speed communications backbone network six months ahead of schedule. The network runs from London to Glasgow and provides connections to 35 towns and cities along the way. The tanet backbone comprises a 2.5-Gbit/sec, fiber-based sdh network overlaid with an atm service that provides integrated voice, video, and data services. Fibernet plans to underlay the network with wdm equipment that will provide up to 32 times the current capacity. With atm on the network, the company says peak traffic handling capacities will be more than 100 times greater than now.
